Karla Hart

Karla was born on 18 May 1978 in Perth Western Australia.

Karla was named NAIDOC artist of the Year 2009

Karla completed the Aboriginal Theatre course 2005 at WA Academy of Performing Arts (units included acting, singing, dancing, writing) and has studied three years in Contemporary Performance at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowen University.

Karla has performed in many plays during her studies and WAAPA which included 'Sea Stories' a WAAPA production which was written, workshopped, directed and produced by Karla and four other cast members. Karla wrote the piece and choreographed a contemporary traditional dance to tapsticks and also performed a family story that her uncle had told her.  Karla has also written and co directed a play called Coconut at The Peppercorn Festival in Perth.

Karla performed in a major production called House of Memory at the Rechabites Theatre in November 2007. Karla also co-directed Journeys of the Happy Buddha a play for the International Puppet Festival held in Perth 2008.  Karla has acted in many community films and a feature film called "Uneven Ground" which was released in 2008. Karla was a artist in residence at Duncraig Primary School in 2008 for the Joondalup festival collaborating with artist Fleur Hockey to create a float and masks and movement piece for performance.

Karla was trained in traditional dance by elders in late 2004 and now manages and performs with "Kwarbah Djookian" a women's traditional dance group who have performed at many major events in Perth and country locations and whom travelled to China in May this year for a 2 ½ week traditional dance tour showcase. Karla has been teaching traditional and contemporary dance and dreamtime story creation and production privately and through Yirra Yaakin Aboriginal Theatre for the last 3 years. 

Karla is a performance poet being a finalist in the Perth Poetry slam this year and a state finalist for the national Poetry Slam for the last two years. Karla is currently a broadcaster on Noongar Radio and in 7th week working with Community Arts Network WA in Kellerberin collaborating with artist Fleur Hockey to create a performance piece for the Kellerberin show and her work include creating dreamtime stories and directing students to perform, creating traditional/contemporary dance pieces and creating a rap with students for performance.

Other Achievements

  • Karla continues to be involved in the 'Finding My Place' programme run through Local Government Libraries throughout the State. 
  • November 2007 - State finalist in National Poetry Slam.
    July 2007 - Finding My Place Workshop at Mandurah Library, Perth WA.
  • June 2007 - Played Office Worker in HBF "More to Like" commercial, Perth WA.
  • January 2007 - "Welcome to Country" - traditional Noongah dancing at Welcome to Country for Perth International Arts Festival, WA
